Chapter 12: Age of Exploration

The Task
1. Describe the goals and accomplishments of an individual explorer.
2. Determine the exploration policy of one European country.
3. Rank and defend the exploration achievements of competing European countries.
4. Gather relevant information from a variety of resources.

5. In groups of 2-3 you will be given an explorer representing Spain, France or England/Netherlands. Your group is to use the accompanying readings (they contain the minimum information needed) your text book and other resource material to:

A. Create and present a visual which demonstrates the key information about their explorers and their voyages. This may take the form of a poster or powerpoint presentation.

B. Complete the "Explorer Record Sheet" for your assigned explorer.

6. The class will the divide into three groups:
Spain: Cortez, Pizarro, DeSoto, Coronado
France: Verrazano , de Champlain, Marquette and Joliet
England/Netherlands: Hudson, Gilbert, Frobisher

7. Each group will gather together and use their combined knowledge to complete the Exploration Policies Chart for their country. They are to appoint a member of their group to present their countries policy to the class.

8. Evaluation: Your grade will be based on.

A. Your poster or powerpoint presentation featuring an explorer.
B. Your Explorer Record Sheet
C. Your group’s evaluation of your countries Exploration policies including the Exploration Policies Chart and one member of your group’s presentation of the policy.
